Lisbon beach and campground director issues ultimatum to town board

LISBON — If the town pushes forward with plans to advertise the Lisbon Beach and Campground director position, Director Michael J. O’Neil says his time at the helm will be over.

“I refuse to apply for that position because I already own it,” he said. “It’s a slap in the face to me.”

In October, the Town Council voted to advertise the position, which comes with a $13,000 salary, but Supervisor James W. Armstrong said Mr. O’Neil could reapply. The final decision on whether to advertise the position will be made at Wednesday’s Town Council meeting, Mr. Armstrong said.

“There have been two or three people in here asking about it, and when they find out what it pays and the obligations, the time they have to spend, they’re gone,” Mr. Armstrong said.

Mr. Armstrong said the position requires someone who is personable, a good leader and organizer and handy enough to deal with the spur-of-the-moment issues typical of managing a campground.

The town is hoping to better outline the duties of the director in the coming months regardless of who takes over, Mr. Armstrong said, to ensure everyone is on the same page about expectations.

But if the town chooses to advertise the position, Mr. O’Neil, who has been with the beach and campground for more than a decade, said he will “definitely” move on.

“I don’t think it’s right,” he said. “Anybody with a backbone, in my opinion, would not go for that.”

In 2013, the beach made a $28,000 profit.

Mr. O’Neil said he is holding out hope that the council will change course and reappoint him.

He said he has not resigned and plans to be back to open the beach and campground May 1.
