OGDENSBURG — The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce will soon plunge into the winter season.

Literally.

The chamber next month will sponsor or participate in several winter-themed events that, it hopes, will make it possible to have fun in the kind of cold, snowy weather that is bracing the city this week.

It all begins at 1 p.m. Feb. 15 when the annual Polar Bear Plunge will be held at the city marina by the Dobisky Center, 100 Riverside Ave.

The event is cosponsored by the Chamber and the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Last year’s swim in the chilly waters of the St. Lawrence River to benefit the Chamber and rescue squad raised more than $7,700 in pledges committed to 31 participants, many of them donning costumes.

Chamber Executive Director Laura J. Pearson trusts the cold weather will hold up.

“I’m hopeful,” she said. “But I don’t have a crystal ball.”

The Chamber uses its 50-percent share of the proceeds to help pay for events it will put on during the rest of the year.

The squad uses its share to buy emergency and medical equipment.

The other events the Chamber is planning for February are:

n Feb. 15: The annual Polar Bear 5K Run/Walk sponsored by Ogdensburg Lions Club from 9 to 11 a.m. It begins at the Dobisky Center.

n Feb. 19: The annual Cabin Fever Picnic at the Dobisky Center.

n Feb. 22-23: The annual Battle of Ogdensburgh re-enactment at Lighthouse Point with Forsyth’s Rifles.

n Feb. 22: The “SNOLF” snow golf tournament at Father Martin Field, Paterson Street, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tournament is held to benefit the St. Lawrence Valley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Chamber events are all scheduled to be part of the city ’s annual River Shiver winter carnival, which will be held Feb. 15 to 23 at various indoor and outdoor locations.

The River Shiver events, which have yet to be announced, include an ice-fishing tournament, four-by-four ice hockey contests, broomball games, basketball tournaments and children’s festivities at the Frederic Remington Art Museum.
