A travel advisory issued Friday evening by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office remains in effect through Sunday at 11 p.m., as ice accumulations of an inch to an inch and a half are expected primarily north and on a line from Watertown to Fort Drum and Harrisville.

Jefferson County has also issued a no unnecessary travel advisory and shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday declared a state of emergency for Jefferson County.

No travel advisory has been issued for Lewis County.

A flood watch for Jefferson and Lewis counties has also been issued by the NWS. With heavy rain and rapid snow melting, 2 to 2.5 inches of rain is anticipated this weekend. The flood watch is in effect from 4 p.m. Saturday until Sunday evening.

Jefferson County residents needing assistance for weather-related non-emergencies are encouraged to call Jefferson County Emergency Management at 786-6940.

The hotline, which was made active at approximately 6:45 p.m., is designed for those needing information on locations of local shelters, any active evacuation plans, Red Cross services and other non-emergency situations. In case of emergency, call 911.

Several minor accidents have been reported due to slippery road conditions. Travelers are advised to take proper precautions when driving. Jefferson County Fire and Emergency Management asks travelers to travel only when necessary, to keep a disaster supply kit in their vehicles and to watch for downed trees and power lines.

Drivers are also advised to travel with emergency supplies, which can include sand or kitty litter, a shovel, a cell phone, a radio, a flashlight, extra batteries and a first aid kit.

People are advised to walk carefully on snowy and icy walkways, and to avoid overexertion.
