CARTHAGE — An anonymous donor’s gift of $1,000 went to the purchase of more than 40 coats for Carthage Central School students at all grade levels who might not have adequate cold-weather attire this year.

The donor, Superintendent Peter J. Turner and Assistant Superintendent Andrea K. Miller used the money to go shopping Wednesday. Mr. Turner said they purchased 44 winter coats. The generous donor wanted to make the donation because the early cold weather brought concerns about the long season ahead. The only request was to remain anonymous.

“This person is a resident of the district but doesn’t have children who currently attend the school,” Mr. Turner said. “We’re so pleased one of our community members would donate this much.”

Of the 44 coats, 20 will go to students whom teachers recommended would benefit the most from a new coat. The rest of the coats will be kept on hand for next winter.

This year there have been several coat drives, including a drive hosted by middle school students and staff that provided coats to 120 students.

“It was such an amazing gift,” Mr. Turner said. “We’re pleased someone would donate so much for our kids to stay warm this winter.”
