MORRISTOWN - Cattleman’s Restaurant may be making a comeback.

Eight months after John G. Hagopian was forced to close Cattleman’s Steak & Ale when the state Liquor Authority revoked his liquor license, a familiar face is interested in purchasing the building and reopening the iconic restaurant.

Michael J. Kinney, Syracuse, operated the restaurant in 2003 and 2004 on behalf of building owner Mahlon T. Clements. Mr. Kinney is hoping to buy the 309 Main St. building and return to the village.

“It’s got a million-dollar view,” Mr. Kinney said. “It’s a lovely spot.”

But Mr. Kinney, who currently works with Sutton Real Estate, said he needs to hear from the community before making a final decision.

“I want to listen to the community, to be honest,” he said. “It should be about what they want. I think that’s the secret to the restaurant business.”

Mr. Kinney and Mr. Clements, working with Morristown Chamber of Commerce President Nathan Barker, are inviting community members to the Morristown Fire Hall Thursday at 7 p.m. to discuss their vision for Cattleman’s.

Coffee and snacks will be provided, Mr. Kinney said.

Mr. Kinney said he is excited by the idea of moving back to the north country,

“I really enjoy the north country,” he said. Mr. Kinney moved back to the Syracuse area in 2008 after spending several years helping Mr. Clements run various restaurants.

In addition to working in real estate, Mr. Kinney also runs Kinney Brokerage, a restaurant consulting business that partners with restaurants on everything from budgeting to food preparation.

“I’ve been in the restaurant business for 40 years,” Mr. Kinney said. “If there seems to be some genuine support, I think we’ve got to look at it.”
