MASSENA - A Russian ship engineer died overnight following a fall he took on a Liberian vessel that was traveling on the St. Lawrence River.

At about 1:30 a.m. Friday, state police said troopers and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to Snell Lock on the St. Lawrence Seaway for a report of a deceased crew member aboard the MCT Altair, a Liberian vessel.

Investigators determined that Sergey N. Menzhiliy of Russia, 54, the vessel’s chief engineer, fell about 10 feet from a flight of stairs while returning to the engine control room, state police said. Medical personnel on the vessel attempted life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.

St. Lawrence County Coroner Jamie Sienkiewicyz pronounced Mr. Menzhiliy dead.

An autopsy, conducted at Massena Memorial Hospital, revealed that Mr. Menzhiliy died due to a pre-existing medical condition, state police said.
