CARTHAGE The Stuff a Bus program at Carthage Central School collected 1,013 food and 50 non-food items for the Village Ecumenical Ministries Food Pantry, down from the roughly 2,500 items brought in last year.
Despite the decrease, Food Pantry Director Darlene Jensen praised the program, which is organized by the district transportation department.
Were so grateful that the school system is so interested in supporting us and helping us, she said. Were very thankful for their help and the consistency with which they do it. Every year they do it without us asking.
Collections ran from Nov. 4 to 15. Last year, the program ran for about a month, which could be the reason for this years decrease in donations.
However, students at the districts schools still are taking donations, including the fourth grade classes at Carthage Elementary, which will finish collections Monday.
This was the second consecutive year of the Stuff a Bus program, and the third year in total.
Community members still may help the food pantry at 452 S. Washington St. by dropping off donations of nonperishable food items, or by sponsoring an angel from the organizations Angel Tree.
To sponsor an angel, contact the food pantry at 493-1341 by Friday.
Angels will include a childs age, gender and what they would like for Christmas. Community members may then return the unwrapped item to the food pantry.
There were a total of 324 angels this year and, as of Dec. 10, just under 20 remained unsupported.
