High school roundup: Stevens powers South Jefferson over Indian River

ADAMS — Austin Stevens scored 33 points to single-handedly outscore Indian River and lead the South Jefferson girls basketball team to a 57-32 season-opening Frontier League crossover victory Wednesday.

Stevens, a senior, shot 13-for-21 from the field and made three of her four 3-point attempts for South Jefferson. Freshman Olivia Simpson added eight points.

Ashlynn Borce scored 12 points to lead Indian River (1-1).

CARTHAGE 50, GENERAL BROWN 39

Lexi Smith’s 15 points helped the Comets to a comeback victory over the Lions in a crossover game at Dexter.

Kendra Bates supplied 12 points and seven rebounds for Carthage (2-0), which trailed by one at the end of the third quarter.

Katie Pitkin led General Brown (2-1, 1-1) with 12 points.

ALEXANDRIA 40, SACKETS HARBOR 28

Morgan Weaver’s first career double-double led the Purple Ghosts to a season-opening “D’’ Division win over the Patriots at Alexandria Bay.

Weaver scored 12 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for Alexandria (1-0). Lorraine Beard added 11 points.

Jenna Fields led Sackets Harbor (0-1) with 12 points.

HOCKEY

IHC 5, BALDWINSVILLE 3

Jordan Trudeau and Jared Pignone each scored twice as the Cavaliers defeated the Bees in a Section 3 Division I game at the Watertown Municipal Arena.

Jonathan Richards also scored and Cole James stopped 19 shots for Immaculate Heart Central (1-1).

Garrett Gray provided a goal and an assist for Baldwinsville (1-1), which scored twice in 17 seconds late in the third to pull to within a goal.

WRESTLING

INDIAN RIVER 61, WATERTOWN 18

Weston Gray won his match at 99 pounds by pin in 14 seconds as the Warriors opened the season with a Frontier League win over the host Cyclones.

Tucker Amato (106), Dylan Crowder (160) and Dylan Ashwood (285) also won their matches via pin in under a minute for Indian River (1-0), while William Eichner (152) and Jonah Raydo (220) also recorded pins.

James Lamson notched a pin at 126 pounds for Watertown (3-2, 0-1).

VOLLEYBALL

WATERTOWN 3, GENERAL BROWN 1

Maggie Finster finished with 13 assists and three kills as the Cyclones captured a crossover victory over the visiting Lions, 25-11, 25-17, 16-25, 25-12.

Porsha Gathers-Grossett added 10 digs and six kills for Watertown (1-1), while Stacia Wallace and Emily Medley provided four kills apiece.

Jennifer Furchak and Cortney Hughes each registered four kills to lead General Brown (0-2).

SOUTH LEWIS 3, BELLEVILLE HENDERSON 0

Chloe Stinebrickner powered the Falcons with 20 assists, nine service points, six digs and six aces in a “C” Division win over the Panthers in Belleville.

Jayne Strigle supplied 18 digs and nine service points, while Marissa Brown added eight kills and four blocks for South Lewis (2-0).

Angela Stenfeldt paced Belleville Henderson (0-1) with seven service points and three aces.

BEAVER RIVER 3, THOUSAND ISLANDS 0

Mallory Mattimore recorded 14 service points to lead host Beaver River to a 25-6, 25-8, 25-9 “C’’ Division win over the Vikings at Beaver Falls.

Thousand Islands fells to 0-2.
