GREAT BEND — Three people remained hospitalized Wednesday after being involved Tuesday evening in a three-vehicle accident in which three other people also were injured.

The six people were injured in an accident involving a tractor towing a manure spreader and two other vehicles shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday on Route 3, near Route 26, in the town of Champion.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said the crash occured after an unidentified 16-year-old boy who was driving a tractor and towing a manure spreader had stopped on Route 3 to make a left-hand turn on Bud Lo Drive.

A 2012 Kia SUV, driven by Carthage resident Genevieve Rhone, failed to stop and plowed into the manure spreader and subsequently was struck head-on by a 2013 Hyundai driven by Robin Barlow, Carthage, the sheriff’s department said.

Two passengers injured in the Kia, Rosemary Bauter and Elizabeth Rushlow, were taken by helicopter to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse. They were listed in fair condition Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff’s department.

Ms. Rhone was taken by ambulance to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, where she was listed in stable condition. Ms. Barlow and two passengers in her vehicle, Tracie Turner and Nancy Campany, also were taken to SMC and later discharged, the sheriff’s department said.

According to Great Bend fire officials, it took more than four hours to clear the manure using snowplows and to reopen the road. The manure was relocated to the side of the road.

The addresses of the other four injured people were not available from the sheriff’s department.
