WADDINGTON – Skaters will be able to enjoy the village’s indoor rink for one more season before its set to close for good next year.

Village board members decided this week to keep the rink open for one more year since renovations to the Donald M. Martin Civic Center will not begin until next year.

The village’s Board of Trustees is looking to renovate the civic center into an all-purpose venue for sports and entertainment during the winter.

During the winter, the civic center largely serves as an ice rink. But the new plan calls for the ice rink to be moved outside, making room for an athletic center that could include batting cages and an indoor track.

The venue also would allow for weddings, reunions, conferences, receptions and concerts, Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said.

Engineers are making changes to the plan following a meeting with village board. Architect Brooks Washburn, Potsdam, presented a newly designed floor plan for the civic center to the village board in October.

“They are working on it,” board member William E. Dashnaw said. “The engineers are set to come back with preliminary plans on the project in March. At that time we will go over the cost estimates and how to go forward with the plans.”

Village trustees will finance the renovations with a $160,000 grant awarded by the River Agency in 2011.

As part of the first phase, the village used $70,272 of its funding to replace the leaking roof on the arena. The project was completed last year.
