HEUVELTON - Jesse C. Coburn has been brought on board as grades seven through 12 principal at Heuvelton Central School, filling the position that has been vacant since Michael W. Warden took over as principal at Salmon River Central School, Fort Covington.
Mr. Coburn has served as principal at the J.W. Leary Junior High School, Massena, for the past five years. Prior to that he was the assistant high school principal at Massena Central School.
His past experience is in Massena, but Mr. Coburn is not a newcomer to Heuvelton. From 2004 to 2007 Mr. Coburn taught high school earth science and a forensic science elective at Heuvelton.
According to Superintendent Susan E. Todd, it was Mr. Coburns background in both administration and teaching that made him stand out.
The district interviewed five candidates for the position beginning in early October. Mr. Coburn received the unanimous support from the districts board of education.
He was appointed at Mondays board of education meeting.
Beginning in September, after Mr. Warden took the position at Salmon River Central School, Ogdensburg resident Randy A. Johnson began filling in as principal at Heuvelton at a per diem rate of $425.
Mr. Johnson retired earlier this year after serving as the Colton-Pierrepont Central School principal for 11 years.
Heuvelton Central School will keep Mr. Johnson on for several more weeks, however, to fill in for pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade Principal Cindy Belleau, who is leaving the district at the beginning of December to become St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services coordinator of district initiatives and curriculum. The district is currently searching for a permanent replacement.
The district is holding an event for parents to meet the new principals on Dec. 11 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. The Heuvelton Parent Teacher Association will serve refreshments. The Junior and Senior High School Winter Concert will take place in the auditorium afterward.
