MORRISTOWN - Home games at Morristown Central School are boasting additional spirit with the addition of a cheerleading squad.

The squad was formed after girls lobbied the district for a chance to try out.

Principal and Athletic Director Jeffrey M. Durant said the school began organizing the squad two months ago as administration recognized that it fits in with their desire to expand student opportunities in the district.

“We haven’t had a cheerleading squad in four or five years,” Mr. Durant said, adding that it can often be challenging to find enough interest.

But this year, nine girls stepped forward to participate in the squad, coached by Megan Bell.

Mr. Durant said the program would not have gone forward without the support of the ladies who wanted the school to have a squad.

Open to people in grades nine through 12, Mr. Durant said the squad currently has “a nice mix of girls” in several grades.

Mr. Durant also said that he hopes to see the squad continue for years to come.

One of the freshmen girls who tried out for the squad was made a captain, Mr. Durant said, which gives him hope for the squad’s long-term future.

Currently the squad will only be cheering at home games played by the boys’ sports teams, but Mr. Durant said the squad may soon be seen at girls’ games as well.

A traveling component could be added too, Mr. Durant said, though the logistics of that will need to be ironed out with other districts.
