Local colleges: SUNY Potsdam hockey earns first win of season

POTSDAM — Vinny Caligiuri provided a goal and an assist as the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team earned its first win of the year with a 5-3 nonconference victory over SUNY Canton on Friday at Maxcy Hall.

The Bears (1-6-0) got goals from five different players, including the game-winner by Ryan Miller 8 minutes, 29 seconds into the third period. Shane Talarico made 13 saves for SUNY Potsdam.

Cory Giczewski scored twice and Luis Puig registered 39 saves for the Kangaroos (1-6-1).

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

CLARKSON 7, PRINCETON 0

Vanessa Gagnon scored twice and Jamie Lee Rattray collect five points, including four assists, as the Golden Knights routed the Tigers (5-3-1, 4-3-0) in an ECAC game at Princeton, N.J.

Erica Howe only needed to make 14 saves to post her sixth shutout of the season for Clarkson (11-3-2, 4-2-1).

ST. LAWRENCE 1, QUINNIPIAC 1 (OT)

Kelly Babstock netted a power-play goal 9:24 into the second period as the Bobcats forged an ECAC tie with the Saints in Hamden, Conn.

Chelsea Laden made 24 saves for Quinnipac (10-1-4, 3-1-3).

Carmen MacDonald turned aside 46 shots and Rylee Smith provided the lone goal for St. Lawrence (5-7-1, 4-2-1).

SUNY POTSDAM 0, SUNY CORTLAND 0 (OT)

Deanna Meunier stopped 40 shots as the Red Dragons (1-4-2, 0-2-1) and the Bears played to a scoreless tie in an ECAC West contest at Corltand.

Alexane Rodrigue collected 24 saves for SUNY Potsdam (2-4-2, 1-3-2).

SUNY CANTON 5, BUFFALO STATE 3

Jessica Kistabish’s second-period hat trick lifted the Kangaroos to a nonconference win over the Bengals in Canton.

Karley Cree distributed four assists for SUNY Canton (3-2-2), which scored all five goals in the second period.

Jeyna Minnick led Buffalo State (0-6-0) with a goal and an assist.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SUNY OSWEGO 90, ST. LAWRENCE 84 (OT)

Brian Sortino’s 21 points and Mark Candelario’s 20 helped the Lakers win a tight nonconference matchup with the Saints in Canton.

Daniel Ross added 16 points for SUNY Oswego (2-2).

Brady Condlin paced St. Lawrence (1-3) with 26 points and Kyle Edwards finished with a season-high 19.
