CANTON — The former SUNY Canton student accused of setting fire to her Potsdam apartment has been indicted on felony arson charges.

Brandi Lee Saumier, 21, of 1071 Buckton Road, Winthrop, was indicted by a St. Lawrence County grand jury Monday on a second –degree arson count.

Saumier is being accused of having set fire a fire in her first-floor apartment at 28 Pierrepont Ave. on Oct. 25, knowing that others were in the building at the time. Nine people escaped, unharmed, from the blaze that destroyed the building.

In a statement to police, Saumier admitted to starting the fire at 1:30 a.m. with no intention of hurting anyone.

Saumier was released from St. Lawrence County jail on Nov. 7 on $5,000 cash bail.
