LISBON - Robert O. McNeil will begin serving as a member of the Lisbon Town Council in January, according to an unofficial tally of write-in votes from the Nov. 5 election.
Mr. McNeil declared himself a write-in candidate in September and began canvassing the community for votes.
St. Lawrence County Democratic Elections Commissioner Jennie H. Bacon said Mr. McNeil took home 361 write-in votes out of a total of 386.
Absentee votes will be included in the total when the election results are certified later this month, Mrs. Bacon said, but only 17 absentee write-ins were counted. Mr. McNeils closest rival was Susan Washburn, who received 10 write-in votes.
Mrs. Bacon said the election results will be certified by Thanksgiving.
Sarah I.R. Green, who also campaigned as a write-in candidate, took home one write-in vote. Michael OBrian, H. Allan Chester, Vincent Winters, Alan Kio, Amber Ball and Leslie Lawton also each received one write-in vote.
Mr. McNeil is no newcomer to political office.
Mr. McNeil served as Lisbon town supervisor in the early 1980s and was a member of the county Legislature before becoming county treasurer in 1986. Mr. McNeil held the treasurers post until 2010. He currently chairs the St. Lawrence River Valley Redevelopment Agency.
Mr. McNeils election to the town council fills the second of two seats that were open in the Nov. 5 race. Incumbent Republican Gary J. Jarvis took home 633 votes, including absentee ballots. Ruth C.O. Green, running as an independent, took home 163 votes after seven absentees.
