POTSDAM — Handmade chocolate returned to the village Tuesday with the opening of Main Street Chocolates at Main St.

Owner Jennifer M. Murphy, Madrid, said she wanted to open the business for her children, Nicholas Searcy, 13, Kelia Searcy, 11, and Lucas Searcy, 8.

“We wanted to open a family-owned business, preferably in the food industry,” she said.

The children will help out around the store when not in school, she said, with everything from making the candy to sweeping the floor.

“They helped us set up; they helped us come up with the business,” she said.

Ms. Murphy will run the shop while keeping her job as a physical therapist assistant.

She said she and her children taught themselves chocolate-making at home. Now they will be making their wares in the store.

The shop sells handmade chocolates with six different fillings, assorted chocolate-covered cookies and classic bulk candy such as jelly beans. Chocolate-covered bacon will be joining the menu soon, according to Ms. Murphy.

“We’re hoping it will be a big business for the kids,” she said.

The shop is just a few doors down from the former St. Lawrence Chocolates, which closed in 2012 after being open for six years, unable to recoup its initial investment.

Ms. Murphy said she plans to avoid the same fate by making her product irresistible.

“We’re hoping to put out a product that people will love,” she said.

The store is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
