Two Belleville residents were accused by city police Wednesday with improperly taking welfare money from the Jefferson County Department of Social Services.

Police said Bradley L. and Elizabeth J. Lillie, of 7767 Route 289, took thousands of dollars from the department.

Documents from City Court said Mr. Lillie, 40, allegedly took $22,531.56 in food and medical benefits, a total that included $13,879 in food stamps, while failing to report rental income received. The department alleged that Mr. Lillie, who improperly received benefits from Nov. 1, 2010, until this May 31, reported paying rent at his residence, when in fact he owned the residence.

Mrs. Lillie allegedly received benefits of $7,109, $6,634 of it in food stamps, by failing to report a child out of the house that would affect her aid and falsely listing child support and Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. She is accused of improperly receiving benefits for a period from Nov. 1, 2009, to Oct. 31.

Both were charged with third-degree welfare fraud and grand larceny along with misuse of food stamps and offering a false instrument at 8:07 a.m. Wednesday on Arsenal Street and were held at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building pending arraignment in City Court.
