CANTON St. Lawrence Universitys mens soccer team, with newly crowned Liberty League Player of the Year Andrew Bednarsky, will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament this weekend at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
St. Lawrence (15-2-2) will face Thomas of Maine (12-7-1) in its first game Saturday. Other schools in the bracket are Wheaton, Mass (16-5) and SUNY Plattsburgh (15-5-1).
The Saints, making their 18th NCAA tournament appearance and 16th under head coach Bob Durocher, won an automatic berth to the tournament by winning the Liberty League title last weekend.
Bednarsky, a senior midfielder, leads the Saints with 20 points (6 goals, 8 assists) and has been a leader defensively at midfield. He won MVP honors in the Liberty League tournament after providing a goal and an assist in the title game. On Monday he was selected the leagues player of the year.
Saints junior goalie Aaron Costello also made the leagues first team. The Saints coaching staff received top honors, recognizing the team for its accomplishments after losing 13 upperclassmen from last years squad.
Clarkson defenseman Trevor Blackwell, a junior, also was a first-team pick, the first Golden Knight to make the team in nine years.
St. Lawrence placed five players on the second team: forwards Jamal Samaroo and Morgan Smith, midfielders Seyefe Brouk and Mark Provost, and defender Harry Copeland.
Bednarsky and SLU defender Daniel Hunt also won weekly league honors for their performances in the league tournament.
