Snow covered roads cause car to overturn in Colton

CANTON — Snow and ice covered roads caused a former Waddington woman’s car to overturn in a road-side ditch early Monday morning.

Standing in the shoulder of Route 56’s northbound lane, surrounded by scattered bottles of water and cans of Pepsi, Danielle K. Sharlow, 24, of Albany, stood looking at her overturned 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix.

Ms. Sharlow was heading south on Route 56 in Colton, just north of Sevey Corners, at approximately 9:16 a.m. when she said she hit a mixture of ice and snow and lost control of her car. The car crossed over the northbound lane and crashed through the guardrail into the roadside ditch, flipping, bottom-side up.

“I wasn’t even speeding,” Ms. Sharlow said. “I hit a patch of slush and thought I could get control of my car.”

Ms. Sharlow, who was uninjured in the accident, said she was leaving her parent’s house in Waddington and heading to Albany for work when the accident occurred.

State police responded to the scene.

Contracted St. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent William E. Dashnaw said the temperature and climate in the county has seen a difference in road conditions due to the elevation into the Adirondack Mountains.

“In the southern part of the county, Star Lake and that southern tip, we have about two inches of snow on the roads,” Mr. Dashnaw said. “We have our trucks out there, but this is typical of this time of year.”

Mr. Dashnaw said while the temperature in that part of the county was down to 29 degrees and snow covered, central and western parts of the county, along the St. Lawrence River, were warmer, topping out at approximately 40 degrees and rain Mondayt.

“Once you come down out of those mountain roads and it warms up,” Mr. Dashnaw said. “So we haven’t gotten very many calls for car accidents.”
