HAMMOND — The search has begun for a permanent superintendent at Hammond Central School.

The new superintendent will replace Douglas H. McQueer, whose contract was not renewed in July.

Board members cited “poor performance” as the reason for Mr. McQueer’s dismissal.

The school board appointed Randy C. Richards as interim superintendent Oct. 8.

According to a settlement agreement between the school board and Mr. McQueer, the school board agreed to begin searching for a substitute on or after Oct. 20. St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services Superintendent Thomas R. Burns has been working as a consultant for the state to help the district hire a replacement superintendent.

“We haven’t been able to meet yet, but we do plan to do so this month,” Mr. Burns said Friday.

At its next meeting on Nov. 12, the Hammond Central School of Board of Education will discuss plans with Mr. Burns to approve qualifications and the process of its desired superintendent.

“The school board is taking this time to discuss a number of qualifications we would like to see in our candidate and issues we want to see get taken care of — policies we want to reinforce, we got a construction project that we would like to see progress on, and better communication,” school board President Timothy W. Pitcher said.

The deadline for applications is Feb. 28.

The school board will select four to six applicants for preliminary interviews on April 28. Three candidates will be selected for full day and evening interviews on May 5.

The new superintendent will be announced May 20 and will begin work July 1.
