AKWESASNE - A youth lacrosse team made up of seventh and eighth graders from several communities spent last weekend qualifying for the Dicks Tournament of Champions.
Competing in the Fall Beach Blast Tournament in Connecticut, the Akwesasne Attack (Team 1) went undefeated through four games to take top honors in their division to earn a bid to the national tournament slated for December 29-31 in Wesley Chapel, Florida.
Coached by Jim Barnes, BigBoy Garrow and Craig Cree along with assistants Nolan Thomas and Oakley Thomas, the team includes players from Akwesasne, Cattaragus, Kahnawake, Massena, Cornwall and Brasher Falls. The Attack opened with a 9-4 win over the Boston Royals at the Fall Beach Blast then earned a bid to the semi-final round by outscoring New York City Topside 7-5. In the semis, the Attack blanked the New Jersey Brotherhood 6-0 before going on to outlast New Fairfield, Connecticut 6-5 in the championship game.
Huntery Pyke anchored a balanced offensive effort for the Attack over the weekend with six goals and four assists. Isaiah Skidders (3 assists) and Kainen Thompson (2 assists) netted five goals apiece while Isaiah Lyon (4 assists) and Dillon Mullin (1 assist) each tallied four. Konnor Sunday added two goals and one helper. Raianerahstha Diome and Nick Trembley chipped in a goal each while Rowisonkies Barnes logged a solo assist.
Other team members include Gage King, Ethan Bush, Jay Chubb, Memphis Mitchell, Stone Jacobs, Mick Miller, Cobie Cree, Brett Logan, Abram Garrow, Cash Feeley and Keldren King.
The team will be hosting fundraising activities throughout the communities it represents to help cover the cost of the trip to the national tournament in Florida.
