A well-known seasonal resident of Grindstone Island, William J. Foltz, died Sunday at his home in New Haven, Conn., at the age of 77, according to an obituary posted on Yale University’s website.

Professor emeritus of African studies and political science at Yale, Mr. Foltz was the director of the Yale Center for International and Area Studies from 1983 through 1989, the obituary said. Mr. Foltz retired from Yale in 2006 but continued to teach and advise students.

Serving on the National Intelligence Council, he also counseled the Clinton administration on its foreign policy toward Africa.

He was born in 1936 in Mount Vernon. Mr. Foltz had spent summers on Murray Isle in his youth and in 1976 he and his family built a home on Grindstone.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at Dwight Chapel at Yale University, 67 High St., New Haven, Conn. Donations may be made to the Neighborhood Music School, New Haven, Conn., or the Thousand Islands Land Trust, Clayton.
