Jefferson County Public Health Service, 531 Meade St., is urging families to protect themselves from lead poisoning, in honor of National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week last week.

According to an agency news release, sources of lead exposure include lead-based paint, lead-contaminated dust in deteriorating buildings, contaminated drinking water, take-home exposure from a workplace and lead in soil. In Jefferson County, about 60 percent of children receive a lead test at age 1 and only 50 percent at age 2.

The public health agency encourages families to test their homes and children.

People with lead poisoning typically have elevated blood lead levels that may result in significant damage to their health.
