BRIER HILL — Within a month, the Brier Hill Volunteer Fire Department will begin operating out of a brand new station at the intersection of School Street and Route 37.

The result of more than six years of preparation, the $1 million facility will be roughly twice the size of the current, aging station and capable of housing the department’s five firetrucks and one rescue boat.

“We currently put five trucks in a two-door station,” Fire Chief Shawn R. Macaulay said. “Everything is packed in there pretty tight.”

The new building, which is being constructed by D.C. Building Systems, Watertown, will have five doors capable of letting trucks in and out.

“Everything will be inside, under one roof,” Mr. Macaulay said.

The final project will see a large community center added onto the back of the fire station as well, Mr. Macaulay said.

But before the community center can be added, the department needs to raise an additional $200,000.

Donations can be sent to the station at P.O. Box 57, Brier Hill, N.Y. 13614.

Once it’s complete, the new community center will have a full kitchen in addition to more room to provide a better space for events.

Mr. Macaulay said he expects the community center to be completed in the spring. In the meantime, the old fire station at 2704 Route 37 will continue to serve as a multi-function community center.

Mr. Macaulay said the department also will be responsible for paving the new fire station on its own, ideally with the help of community members who volunteer their time.
