Section 3 soccer: Copenhagen girls (16-0) are No. 1 seed in ‘D’

On the strength of a perfect record in the regular season, the Copenhagen girls soccer team has garnered the No. 1 seed in Class D for the Section 3 playoffs.

The Golden Knights (16-0), who are ranked second the state in Class D, were awarded the top seeding based on having a better winning percentage than second-seeded Poland (14-2), which is ranked No. 1 in the state.

Copenhagen — which is only one of two unbeaten girls soccer teams in Section 3 — will open its postseason by hosting a quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. Thursday against the winner of a first-round game between Stockbridge Valley and Old Forge.

The Golden Knights, who won the Frontier League’s “D” Division regular-season and playoff titles this season, lost to Poland in the sectional semifinals last year.

Among the boys soccer pairings in Class D, Immaculate Heart Central (11-3-1) is seeded second, with Copenhagen (16-0) the No. 3 seed.

IHC, which lost in the sectional final to Poland last year, finished second in the Frontier’s “A” Division this season. Poland (16-0), ranked No. 1 in the state, is again the top seed in Class D.

The Cavaliers will host McGraw (6-8-2) in a quarterfinal game at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The Golden Knights, seventh-ranked in the state, and winner of both the league’s “D” Division regular-season and playoff championships this season, will host Madison (8-8-0) in a quarterfinal at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Unbeaten Watertown (14-0-2), which has won the league’s past seven “A” Division crowns both in the regular season and playoffs, is seeded third in the Class A boys field.

The Cyclones, who are ranked 11th in the state in Class A, will host a quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. Friday against the winner of a first-round game between Cortland and Central Valley Academy. Indian River, which was edged by Watertown in penalty kicks in the division playoff final, is seeded eighth and will host No. 9 Oneida (7-8-1) in a first-round game at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Also seeded third is South Jefferson’s girls team, which won the league “B” Division title this year. The Spartans (13-1-2) receive a bye into the quarterfinal round, where they’ll face either No. 6 Lowville (13-3-0) or No. 11 Altmar-Parish-Williamstown (6-8-0), who will square off in a first-round game at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Lowville.

In the Class A girls field, Watertown (8-4-4) is seeded fifth and Carthage (8-6-2) is the No. 8 seed.

The Comets, who won the league’s “A” Division playoff final over the Cyclones on penalty kicks on Friday, will host No. 9 Fulton (7-6-3) in a first-round game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Watertown, which won the league’s regular-season title, will play at No. 4 Whitesboro (8-4-4) in a quarterfinal on Thursday at a time to be announced.

“C” Division girls champion Thousand Islands (12-3) is seeded fourth in the Class C-1 field and will host No. 5 Herkimer (11-4-1) in a quarterfinal 3 p.m. Thursday. IHC is the No. 9 seed and plays at No. 8 Cato-Meridian (6-8-2) in a first-round game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

In the Class C-2 field, Beaver River is seeded fourth and will host No. 5 Sandy Creek in quarterfinal at 3 p.m. Thursday.

“D” Division runner-up Lyme (10-5-1) is the fifth seed in Class D and will host No. 12 Madison (4-9-3) in a first-round game at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Sackets Harbor (5-10) is seeded 13th.

Among other local teams in the Class D boys field, division runner-up Lyme (12-4) is seeded eighth and will host No. 9 Old Forge (9-5-1) in a first-round game at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Sackets Harbor (10-6) is seeded 11th and Alexandria (8-7) is the No. 11 seed.

In Class B, General Brown (8-7-1) and Lowville, who shared the league’s “B” Division title, are seeded ninth and 10th respectively, with South Jefferson (4-12-0) the 12th seed.

Thousand Islands (8-7), which won the “C” Division crown, is seeded ninth in the Class C field.
