OGDENSBURG City firefighters will be going door to door to check home smoke detectors and, if necessary, equip them with new batteries.
Chief Michael J. Farrell said the visits will begin between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the deadline for completion set for Nov. 3.
The firefighters will have 400 batteries to give away.
According to Mr. Farrell, 96 percent of all homes have at least one smoke detector. Yet an estimated 2,000 people die each year because the devices dont work or arent installed properly.
Working smoke detectors, Mr. Farrell said, are more essential in the winter months when home heating systems and wood-burning stoves are in use. He said smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years and tested monthly.
