COLTON - The Colton Hepburn Library has recently received a grant from the Libri Foundation in Eugene, Oregon and has used the funds to purchase children’s books.

Library board Trustee Eleanor Menz shared the news with the Colton Town Board at their meeting this week.

“The Colton library has received a grant from the Libri Foundation for the purpose of purchase of 67 children’s books. The grant was made possible by the Friends (of the Library), who provided a third of the funding, which was matched by the foundation,” Ms. Menz said.

According to the library’s web site, Friends of the Library consist of a group of individuals who are interested in doing things to supplement and support the library. The total retail value of the 67 books, which range from pre-school to young adult, was $1,050.

Ms. Menz added that the grant came at a very good time for the library.

“This has been really important to us now because a lot of our funds are used up,” she said. “So this enables us to purchase books that we couldn’t have purchased otherwise. So we’re pleased about that.

“The important thing is that funding for libraries has really been drying up and this will be very helpful. We pride ourselves with having a lot of current and new books.”

For 20 years the foundation has sponsored the “Books For Children” program, but this is the first time they have worked with the Colton Hepburn Library.

The library celebrated its centennial earlier in the year.
