Four individuals, two state championship teams inducted by Canton Athletics into Hall of Fame

CANTON - Four individuals and two state championship teams were inducted into the Canton Central Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday night in a ceremony held at the Canton High School auditorium.

Larry Hazen ‘71, Jeff Olvert ‘83, Brandy Bessette-Symons ‘94 and James Nee ‘95 were inducted along with the 1996-97 and 1997-98 Golden Bear boys hockey teams which each captured Division I state titles.

Larry Hazen ‘71

While a student as Canton Central, Larry was a 4-year letterman in basketball and a three-year letterman in football. He was a third team All Northern in basketball his junior year and a first team All Northern his senior year.

As a junior, he ranked ninth in league scoring with 277 points and was second in scoring with 317 points as a senior.

Following graduation, Larry attended Cortland State where he played two years of varsity basketball and earned his B.S. degree in education.

He currently resides in Potsdam and along with his wife, Pam, they own and operate several successful businesses. They have a daughter, Tess, and a son, Lawrence, who are both currently enrolled in college.

Jeff Olvert ‘83

A 1983 graduate, Jeff was an outstanding three-sport athlete. He played five years of varsity baseball and earned All-Northern honors four times. He also played three years of varsity soccer and three years of varsity hockey and was a two-time All Northern in both sports.

Following his graduation, Jeff attended Clarkson University and earned his B.S. degree in Engineering and Management. He is employed as Executive VP of Sales and Marketing for Lytron, Inc. and currently resides in North Grafton, MA with his wife, Kelly, and their three daughters, Madison, MacKenzie and Katie.

Brandy Bessette-Symons ‘94

A 1994 graduate, Brandy was an outstanding athlete in soccer and softball. In addition to being named a two-time All Northern in soccer, she was also voted Offensive MVP twice. During her four-year softball career she was a three-time All Northern and won the Coach’s Award her senior year.

Following graduation, Brandy earned a B.S. degree in Psychology from St. Lawrence University. She also played soccer at St. Lawrence and earned Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1994 and Outstanding Defensive Player a sa senior. She went on to earn her M.A. degree from Xavier University and her PhD from Syracuse University in Experimental Psychology.

Brandy is employed as an Assistant Professor at Ithaca College and lives in Cortland with her husband, Charles.

James Nee ‘95

A 1995 graduate, Jim was a three-sport athlete in soccer and lacrosse. He was a two-time All Northern in soccer and a team captain his senior year. During an outstanding lacrosse career, he was second team All Northern as a junior and a High School All American, first team All Northern and Section 10 scoring leader as a senior.

Following graduation, Jim attended LeMoyne College where he earned a B.A. Degree in History and he was also a College All American in lacrosse.

Jim is currently employed as a social studies teacher and athletic director at Colton-Pierrepont Central School and lives in Canton with his wife, Beth, and their children, Abbigale and Grady.
