There was no lack of creativity at the second annual Blowout Fantasy Hair Show on Sunday afternoon at the Paddock Club, where local hairstylists demonstrated their talents and showed off their craziest works of art.
We participated last year and came in second. It was so much fun and it allowed the girls to be creative, said Laurel A. Blackmore, manager of Marcy Spa and Salon in Watertown, which had two contestants models Cynthia J. Maggard as a peacock and Jamie L. Weatherhead as a rock star partaking in this years competition.
Every team spent four to six hours preparing for the show, which had six models wearing everything from a pirate ship fashioned out of colored hair extensions to a ravens nest with roses and black feathers.
But it wasnt all for glamor and glory.
Proceeds from the hair show will benefit AIDS Community Resourcess annual First Frost AIDS Walk/Run fundraiser held in Watertown.
Theres a lot of camaraderie and rivalry between the hairstylists, said ACRs development associate, Jacki C. Coe, an organizer of the annual hair show.
Two more salons participated in the 2013 Blowout than in last years hair show which raised $1,000 for the annual walk/run fundraiser and the Paddock Club was completely packed with spectators by the time the models lined up in the hallway at 3:30 p.m. Tickets to get in were sold for $10 each.
Five Watertown salons Marcy Spa and Salon, A New Attitude Salon & Spa, Ulta Beauty, Curled Salon and House of Beauty participated in this years contest.
Taking home the trophy for craziest hair Sunday were A New Attitudes stylists Rose L. Monteith and Amber Phipps, who transformed model Mandy Marzano into an owl with wings of sweeping, interwoven locks.
Along with the trophy, a gift basket, hair products and bragging rights, A New Attitude will get to display its banner for free at the First Frost fundraiser.
The 14th annual First Frost AIDS Walk/Run to benefit AIDS prevention and education programs in Northern New York will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 20 at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park.
