Madrid-Waddington Central School sets up fund for charitable donations to help bolster programming

MADRID - The Madrid-Waddington Central School District has established an educational foundation with the Northern New York Community Foundation in order to provide donors with an easy way to support the school.

“We’re very excited,” Superintendent Lynn M. Roy said. “It’s another resource for our community to support our school.”

The new foundation will allow individual donors, businesses and community organizations to support the school with a gift or through their will. And because it’s a charitable foundation, the gift will be tax-deductible.

The fund will be managed by the Community Foundation for the foreseeable future.

“Over time the fund will grow,” Rande S. Richardson, Community Foundation executive director, said. “Now the structure is in place that provides an opening for people who want to benefit the district broadly.”

Mr. Richardson said the foundation is especially valuable in today’s climate of uncertain federal and state funding for local schools.

“The main intent of this is to provide programming and equipment and supplies for the school that wouldn’t normally be funded through the budgetary process,” he said.

Mrs. Roy said the program will also allow donors to earmark where they want their donations to go.

Money could be set aside for the music department or the athletic department, for instance, providing them with extra money to bolster programing, Mrs. Roy said.

While they’re still in the preliminary stages of getting the fund off the ground, Mrs. Roy said the district will likely have a committee set up that will be responsible for dispersing the funding appropriately.

“The district will determine how much will be given out and where,” Mr. Richardson said. “It’s about empowering the school to figure out where [the money is] spent.”

Anyone looking to make a charitable donation to Madrid-Waddington Central School can contact the Community Foundation at 782-7110.

The Community Foundation administers similar funds in other school districts including Hermon-DeKalb, Morristown, St. Lawrence Central and Potsdam.
