LISBON - Records were broken at the Lisbon Beach and Campground this summer.

“We make sure that the people who come here are reputable and not causing any problems and that helps,” Camp Director Michael J. O’Neil said. “It’s a good safe, clean place to come to.”

This year the campground was at capacity nearly every weekend, Mr. O’Neil said, forcing them to open up roughly ten dry, overflow sites.

With more than 90 sites in total Mr. O’Neil said, “If we had more sites we could fill them.”

Part of the boost this year came from the Bassmaster Fishing Tournament held in August in Waddington.

“It really helped,” Mr. O’Neil said.

But it’s not just one-time events that are spurring the increased popularity of the campground.

Mr. O’Neil said this year saw roughly 50 seasonal campers stay for a month or longer. That’s about 10 more than last year.

“It seems that we’ve become more popular by doing things right,” Mr. O’Neil said.

The increase in activity was not limited to the campground.

More than 150 kids from Lisbon, Heuvelton, Morristown and Ogdensburg took swimming lessons at the beach this summer, Mr. O’Neil said.

Up until this summer there had never been more than 100 kids taking lessons at the beach, he said.

“The beach is really thriving,” Mr. O’Neil said.

Last year the beach turned a $28,000 profit and Mr. O’Neil said he expects to turn a profit again this year. The Lisbon Beach and Campground officially closes on Oct. 15.

With Canadian Thanksgiving on Oct. 14 and Columbus Day on Oct. 12 Mr. O’Neil said he expects to have a busy final weekend, further adding to the success of the season.

“We’ve got quite a few [campers] coming,” he said.
