OGDENSBURG — The Ogdensburg Fire Department will start the fall season with traditional community fire prevention duties outside the firehouse.

Chief Michael J. Farrell said that October’s observance of Fire Prevention Month will focus on kitchen fires.

“We have a lot of kitchen fires,” he said. “That’s the room where most fires start.”

The city’s elementary schools will be a visited by newly certified fire and life safety educators and firefighters Eric W. Brunet, Scott A. McCormick and Jamie L. Ladouceur.

Children should have adult supervision, and some adolescent children may be left home for short periods while their parents are at work, Mr. Farrell said.

Those children, he said, are becoming familiar with cooking and kitchen utensils, and especially need to know what to do in the event of a fire.

“It’s a whole different program with the kids now,” Mr. Farrell said.

Also in October, the fire department will be conducting smoke detector checks in homes.

“These life-saving devices are the first defense in fire prevention training,” Mr. Farrell said.
