Transient boating slips at the city of Ogdensburg’s St. Lawrence River marina will triple in number if federal funding to pay for their installation is approved.

The city council on Monday voted 6-1 in favor of applying in cooperation with the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for up to $200,000 from the U.S. Department of the Interior/Fish and Wildlife Service’s Boating Infrastructure Grant program.

The BIG program covers up to 75 percent of the cost with the rest locally through in-kind services and administrative expenses.

The Greenbelt marina currently has 57 permanent boating slips and seven transient slips.

More transient boater traffic is wanted in order to expand the marina and make Ogdensburg’s waterfront a tourism destination point, city officials say.

“If we don’t have it, they’re not going to come,” said City Manager John M. Pinkerton.

The lawmakers decided to switch location from next to the marina to just up river by the boat launch where there is deeper water and less boat traffic.

Mayor William D. Nelson and councilors R. Storm Cilley, Wayne L. Ashley, William D. Hosmer Jennifer Stevenson and Daniel E. Skamperle voted in favor.

Deputy Mayor Michael D. Morley cast the sole opposing vote, saying that the city’s private marinas should get the transient boating business.

“It’s getting too crowded down there,” he said of the Greenbelt marina.
