Indian River hopes to fill vacant seat soon

PHILADELPHIA — Indian River Central’s vacant Board of Education position may soon be filled.

The board unofficially decided at Thursday’s meeting to fill Rhonda L. Calhoun’s seat with a former board member to benefit from their past experience.

“We’ll try to fill it with past people, if that’s possible,” said Board President Frank J. Laverghetta.

The replacement will only be temporary; a new board member will be chosen by residents during the district budget vote in May.

Ms. Calhoun announced at the board’s Aug. 22 meeting that she would step down because she was moving out of state. She served nine years as a board member and said she was amazed by the growth created by Fort Drum.

Mr. Laverghetta hopes the empty spot can be filled soon.

“I’m hoping to have an answer for the board by the next meeting,” he said.

He said the district’s attorney advised that the board could keep the seat open until May — when the area residents vote on the budget and new board members. However, he said he didn’t feel that option was right for the district.

“We have nine seats,” he said. “The reason for the odd number is to get a majority vote.”

He said a controversial topic could “go into limbo” and create problems moving resolutions if the vote is even.

Additionally, the board could hold a special election. However, he said that would cost too much money for the district.

In other business, the board was in executive session for one hour and 32 minutes to discuss the employment of a specific person.
