POTSDAM - A 36-year-old Potsdam man was taken to Fletcher-Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt. after being struck by a car on state Route 56 early Thursday morning.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said the accident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. in the middle of a heavy rain storm.

Natalie J. Plunkett, 26, of the Sissonville Road in Potsdam was southbound on when she came upon Christopher L. DeShane, also of the Sissonville Road standing in the middle of her lane of traffic near T.J. Toyota 6700 state Route.

Mr. Wells said Ms. Plunkett attempted to avoid Mr. DeShane, but was unable to do so, sideswiping him and striking him with the right, front quarter panel of her car.

Mr. Deshane was then transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he was transferred to Fletcher-Allen Medical Center for treatment of a head injury.

Mr. Wells said investigation into the accident is ongoing, but he said no charges are expected to be filed against Ms. Plunkett.
