A weather-related power outage struck the city Tuesday morning, leaving all of downtown and much of the State and Ford streets corridors without electricity from 7 to 8:35 p.m.

It was the second power outage in the city in five days.

“The outage in Ogdensburg affected about 700 customers beginning at approximately 7:15 a.m. due to a wire down on Patterson Street,” said National Grid spokesperson Virginia Limmiatis. “We took those customers offline at approximately. 8:10 a.m. to perform repairs and brought them all back online at approximately 8:35 a.m.” City Hall and the Ogdensburg Fire Department, both located on Ford Street, avoided total darkness with emergency generator power.

“We heard a crack of lightning and then the generator kicked on,” said Fire Chief Michael J. Farrell.

Ogdensburg police received seven calls concerning non-functioning traffic lights during the power outage, prompting patrolmen to manually direct traffic.

Last Friday, a transformer fire atop a National Grid pole on Route 68 south of the city of Ogdensburg left 1,300 of the utility’s customers without power Friday from 8:50 to 9:10 a.m.

Ogdensburg and Heuvelton firefighters responded to the scene to find that a National Grid crew had it under control.

The outage reached the village of Heuvelton as well as Ogdensburg Free Academy.
