Two St. Lawrence County workers with the state Department of Environmental Conservation were part of a 20-person team that spent two weeks helping to contain a fire at the Lolo Creek Complex near Missoula, Mont.
James Canevari, a DEC Lands & Forests sawyer, and Aaron Graves, DEC Lands & Forests firefighter, both out of the departments St. Lawrence County operation, worked the fire area, which stretched over 10,900 acres. The group returned to the area Tuesday.
The team joined crews from other states in battling the wildfires, which had grown from 3,000 acres to more than 8,500 acres in a three-day period and threatened some 1,200 residences.
The New York team assisted in creating control lines to contain the wildfires, clear materials from the path of the fires and protect residences, while facing 90-degree Fahrenheit temperatures.
