WADDINGTON - Waddington will hold memorial services Wednesday in honor of fallen victims of the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Waddington is one of the few communities in that county that continue to hold memorial services for 9/11 victims, according to organizer and town historian E. Jane Layo.

The town has held services every year after the attacks occurred.

“Waddington, since that fateful day, has never forgotten the price many families have paid to keep us safe,” Mrs. Layo said. “We have not missed a single year of bringing these memories to the forefront.”

The march will begin at 5:30 p.m. from Island View Park and will make its way to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 129 Lincoln Ave, where prayers will be offered for the victims and volunteers.

Waddington invites residents, emergency responders from surrounding communities, friends and neighbors to join them in the walk led by Waddington Fire and Rescue, bagpipers, Madrid Fire and Rescue, and the American Legion and Auxiliary.

Fire Chief Matthew G. Mayette said the march is held every year, no matter the conditions.

“We’ve marched in the rain and sleet,” Mr. Mayette said. “Nothing is going to stop us. It’s something we do just to keep the memory alive. We do it out of respect. There were a lot of men and women that sacrificed and lost their lives.”

The public is invited to attend the reception afterwards at the Champion-Hobkirk American Legion Post 420.
