City police say a Hammond man was driving under the influence when he wrapped his car around the pole in on New York Avenue Friday evening.
Edward G. Gagnon, III, 23, of 73 Turner Road, Hammond, was traveling southbound on New York Avenue when his the Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving veered into oncoming traffic and hit a pole on the west side of the street shortly after 6:30 p.m., police said.
The accident happened outside of 700 New York Ave.
After an initial sobriety test, Mr. Gagnon was taken into custody by city police where he was evaluated for the use of drugs and/or alcohol. It was unclear under what substance police suspected him of driving.
According to police, Mr. Gagnon said a mechanical failure caused the crash.
Two children, one toddler and one infant, were in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Their exact ages were not released by police. No injuries were reported.
A National Grid team was on site to repair damage to the pole.
City police said more information could not be provided Friday because the accident is still under investigation.
