MASSENA — Maple Street residents can expect to see new energy-efficient LED lighting installed in their area soon, replacing high-pressure sodium bulbs.

Massena Electric Department Deputy Supervisor Dale F. Raymo said during the utility board’s monthly meeting that the new lighting recently was received but that it will take some time to get the manpower scheduled to install it.

“They just came in stock on Monday or Tuesday of this week, so they’ll be putting them up soon,” Mr. Raymo said. “I’ll wait until I get two-man crews. Right now there’s a lot of vacation time, so I got to get a two-man crew quite a bit, so I’ll have them putting those up.”

Massena Electric Department Superintendent Andrew J. McMahon said it will be “very interesting to see the reaction to” the LED lighting.

Each LED fixture costs approximately $300 as opposed to $100 for the existing lighting. However, Mr. Raymo said, they will pay for themselves in energy savings over time.

“There’s about 24 light fixtures going down between Main Street and Town Line Road, and all 24 of those lights right now are a high-pressure sodium light and they give off a yellowish tint,” he said.

Payment for the LED fixtures came out of the MED’s energy-efficiency fund, part of the department’s global relief program. It has received grants from Alcoa and the New York Power Authority to assist with the program.
