CAPE VINCENT – Sixteen young pianists from China, Chile, Guatemala, Canada and the U.S. will compete in this year’s 1000 Islands International Piano Competition on the St. Lawrence River next month.

The Chopin Society of the Thousand Islands and the Cape Vincent Arts Council-sponsored event will be held for the 11th year Sept. 7 and 8 at the historic grounds of Maple Grove Estate, 596 W. Broadway.

Founded by the late William J. Grant, the annual competition is free.

Contestants are broken into two groups — an under-19 age division and a 19 to 25 division — and will perform for approximately 15 to 25 minutes.

These fledgling musicians come from esteemed schools such as Eastman School of Music, Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music, Indiana University and Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute of Music.

The three judges for this year’s competition will be Brian Preston from Nazareth College, Rochester; Gary Fisher, a piano instructor at Nazareth College, and William Wolfram, a bronze medalist at the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow and finalist in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition held in Fort Worth, Texas.

Event organizers are seeking volunteers and donations for the annual competition. For more information, contact the Cape Vincent Arts Council at 654-2413.
