Star Lake water use is restricted

STAR LAKE — The town of Fine has restricted water use for the Star Lake water district, which is experiencing high demand and production capability limitations. Nonessential water use is prohibited.

Nonessential uses include watering lawns and plants, washing cars, other equipment and other outdoor surfaces, filling pools, and taking water from fire hydrants.

Bathing should be kept to a minimum.

Violations could result in water service shut-off or a fine.

Users also should boil water for drinking and cooking purposes until further notice because the water, which comes from Star Lake, is not being filtered for the time being.

The system’s problems are illustrative of the difficulties it goes through annually when the summer population swells and production cannot keep up with demand.

“I keep losing ground,” said Fine Supervisor Mark C. Hall, who is also the water superintendent. “It’s going to continually happen until we get a new system. We’re at the point where demand is continually growing.”

Heavy demand causes the system’s filters to clog more frequently. Instead of a cleaning every four days as in the winter, summer filter work takes place several times daily, including in the middle of the night.

Mr. Hall said he is working with the state Department of Health on installing additional temporary filters for a short-term solution.

The water district is looking at an improvement project with the assistance of the Development Authority of the North Country and the engineering firm of Barton & Loguidice to upgrade the 1952 system and consider connection with the Woodhaven water district.

The evaluation will consider water source, treatment system, storage tank, piping and expansion.
