UTICA The Watertown Rams moved a step closer to capturing the Western Division title of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League on Saturday.
The Rams 9-4 rain-shortened, six-inning victory over the host Utica Brewers, combined with second-place Elmiras 10-4 loss at Newark, cut the Rams magic number for clinching the division to two. That is any combination of Watertown wins and Elmira losses adding up to two would give the Watertown franchise its first division title since 2006, then as a member of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Watertown built a 5-0 lead after two innings to earn its fifth consecutive road win.
The Rams (26-18) are off today before concluding the season with a game at Adirondack on Monday, a home doubleheader with Albany on Tuesday and the season finale at home versus Utica on Wednesday.
Elmira (21-21) has five games remaining.
