Potsdam days away from switch to branded garbage bags

POTSDAM — Branded garbage bags will soon be the norm in the village, rather than the stickers now used to mark trash bags that will be hauled away.

Casella Waste Services, which manages trash pickup in the village, first proposed the change in March. The bags will be available for purchase within the next few days, although stickers will still be accepted through Aug. 31.

“The bags are expected in any day. We haven’t seen it yet, but it should be available soon,” said village Administrator David H. Fenton.

The 15-gallon bags will be sold in packs of 10, at $1.40 per bag, and 30-gallon bags will be sold in packs of five at $2.80 each. Stickers were sold at $1.25 apiece and did not include the cost of a bag.

The bags will be available at the village office, both of Potsdam’s Kinney Drug stores, Save a Lot, IGA Supermarket and the Casella offices.

Casella will begin picking up the bags as soon as they are available.

Most village residents are already aware of the switch and have been trying to purchase the bags, according to Mr. Fenton.

Casella decided to move away from the long-standing sticker system to prevent counterfeiting. Although no arrests were ever made, Casella and village police had to deal with several instances of people making copies of stickers to try to get trash pickup on the cheap.

The stickers are also prone to falling off

The bright yellow bags — emblazoned with the Casella logo on one side and the village’s logo on the other — would be nearly impossible to counterfeit and would remove all doubt as to whether villagers are following the rules.

“If somebody is trying to cheat and dump in your dumpster, you’re going to notice it really quickly,” Mr. Fenton said.
