CLEVELAND — Bill Hasseler of Watertown added to his cache of national titles by winning the gold medal in the 5-kilometer race at the National Senior Games earlier this month in Cleveland.

Hasseler, 77, also won a silver medal in finishing second in the 10k race in the 75-79 age group at the games.

A retired Watertown High School teacher, Hasseler secured the 5k national championship in 24 minutes, 14.8 seconds — five seconds ahead of his closest competitor. He also finished second in the 10k in 51:05.1.

Hasseler, who won both 5k and 10k national titles in his age group two years ago in Houston, also won both championships at the 2007 games in Louisville, Ky.

Watertown’s Bill Chapin took home a bronze medal in the 10k national race (ages 70-74) in 51:05.6 Chapin, 70, also finished fifth in the 5k in 23:48.2.
