Unemployment statistics for June 2013 released by the state Department of Labor on Tuesday improved compared with last year in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
Compared with June 2012, Jefferson Countys jobless rate in June 2013 dropped from 9.4 to 8.8 percent, Lewis Countys from 9.5 to 9 percent, and St. Lawrence Countys from 10.8 to 9.6 percent. In contrast to May 2013, unemployment in Jefferson County decreased from 9.0 to 8.8 percent and in Lewis County from 9.3 to 9 percent; the rate increased in St. Lawrence County from 9.2 to 9.6 percent.
Despite improvement from last year, St. Lawrence County has the second worst rate statewide and Lewis County had the fifth worst.
New Yorks 52-county upstate jobless rate in June 2013 also dropped compared with June 2012, from 8.5 to 7.2 percent. Statewide, unemployment over that same time frame decreased from 8.7 to 7.6 percent.
