In June, Kerry Newell of Heuvelton was part of an international crew which took second place in the Voyageur Division of world renown Yukon Challenge in Alaska.
Today, he will be part of a foursome which will paddle in the Governors Cup professional race on Indian Lake.
He has raced in top flight events all over country but each year he looks foward to enjoying the unique charm of the Heuvelton to Ogdensburg Remington I Canoe Race of the Ogdensburg Seaway Festival.
As I was driving home from the Yukon I was looking forward to just getting out on the course and enjoying this race, said Newell on Saturday after teaming up with one of the areas premier kayakers, Dave McAdoo, to win the Mens Division of the 2013 Remington Race.
Newell and McAdoo, who also won the draw for a beautifully framed Remington print which donated by the Frederic Remington Art Museum, and the rest of the field enjoyed the high water conditions and brisk breeze which counteracted the effects of the recent heat wave.
I am sure of the threat of a storm kept some people away but we had a good day. And we are looking for better things next year said Race Director Jennifer Warriner.
The fastest time of the day was turned in by the sleek Grasse River Boatworks C-4 craft powered by the eloquent paddle strokes of Steve Coffin and John, Johnny and Gene Newman.
