Jefferson County Historical Society interim Executive Director Catherine M. Pisarski said the historic Paddock Mansion is the perfect backdrop for the agencys inaugural estate sale.
The wine and cheese preview from 5 to 7 p.m. today and the sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the mansion, 228 Washington St., will help raise funds for the agency, which has struggled financially for the past several years. There is a $5 fee for tonights event, while there is no admission charge Saturday.
It was difficult because there are so many wonderful events going on in the summer, Mrs. Pisarski said. This seemed like such a perfect event with this Victorian house. I think we were looking for a new and different fundraiser and had never done something like this before. Some of the things people buy here will be cherished as long as people did whove brought them in.
The sale of glassware, household items, antiques and collectibles will take place under tents on the side lawn and in back in the Victorian gardens, but furniture will be displayed in the Massey house, adjacent to the gardens.
Mrs. Pisarski said the sale will include hundreds of items donated by the public and from the Historical Societys collection. Featured items include spinning wheels, fine china, jewelry, prints and antique chairs. Items for donation will be accepted through today. Clothes and books will not be accepted. Items Mrs. Pisarski would like to see more of include kitchenware and small appliances.
In an estate sale, she said, there isnt one category better than another, because so many types of people come looking for their favorite item.
Mrs. Pisarski said the term estate sale denotes quality, instead of the quantity found in rummage sales.
One month into her directorship, Mrs. Pisarski said she already is preparing for her departure, as the agencys board of directors is expected soon to select a permanent director. The society has been without a permanent director since William G. Wood resigned in February. Stephen P. Lyman became the first interim director in March, but recently left that position.
