Rare ride to make US debut in Lowville

LOWVILLE — He’d just traveled 40 hours and slept a mere four, but Philip B. Shane was hard at work at the Lewis County Fair on Wednesday, helping set up an amusement ride he recently sold to Coleman Bros. He was sweaty and dirty, but clearly excited to talk about Twin Flip, one of only two traveling rides like it in the world.

“What doesn’t it do?” he said when asked to describe the ride he’s operated for the last five years in Australia. “It goes around. It goes upside down and sideways.”

With all that spinning and flipping, do a lot of riders get sick?

“No, we reprogrammed it so it doesn’t make people get sick,” Mr. Shane joked. Though it looks dizzying, he categorized it “as more of a thrill ride than anything else.”

It may be scary looking, Mr. Shane said, but it’s a safe ride. “We have a great safety system,” he said.

The work, which included not only the setup but conversion to U.S. power, was nearing completion Wednesday evening. Before fairgoers can take a spin, however, it has to be inspected. Mr. Shane said he was hopeful it will make its U.S. debut either tonight or Friday morning.

The Lewis County Fair continues through Saturday. For a full schedule of events, visit www.lewiscountyfair.org.
