WADDINGTON – Teens from across the country will soon gather in Waddington in the hopes of reeling in some big carp.

The 11th annual St. Lawrence International Junior Carp Tournament is set for Aug. 15 to 17.

The event has become very popular over the last 11 years.

“We already have kids that have registered since last fall,” St. Lawrence County Chamber events and program coordinator Jo Ann Roberts said. “We have kids registered from four other states and Canada.”

The teens will fish from Ogdensburg to Massena, but the fishing location is chosen by lottery.

“If you fish as a team, you will be able to fish nearby,” Ms. Roberts said.

Age groups will be split into two categories: 11 to 14 and 15 to 18. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to boys and girls in each category.

Teens also have an opportunity to register as a team to win additional prizes.

Teens can sign up by downloading an application from northcountryguide.com. The cost is $125 per fisher. Only 125 registrants will be accepted.

Registration and Mort Backus and Sons Carp School will take place at Madrid-Waddington Central School. An opening ceremony will be held at the Donald Martin Civic Center.

Fishing starts at 7 a.m. Friday morning and continues at 7 a.m. Saturday morning until 5 p.m. Excellus BlueCross/BlueShield will host a closing ceremony and pizza party at the school.

This year’s Grand Marshall will be Dale Vallance, a two-time grand champion of the tournament.

“It’s a family-oriented event that brings kids and parents together and teaches them the love of the outdoors as well as catch and release,” Ms. Roberts said. “Fishing in the tournament brings about a lot of camaraderie between the kids.”

The event also promotes fishing in the area.

“The event showcases our resources and natural beauty of the St. Lawrence,” Ms. Roberts said.
